Bataan Rescue

In 1941, tens of thousands of Filipino and American soldiers fought a battle to defend the Bataan peninsula in the Philippines from the Japanese. After they lost, they were marched to prison camps through the blazing hot, mosquito infested, greasy jungle with little or no water. Thousands died along the way. The Bataan peninsula forms  the western side of Melina Bay, this became known as the site of the Outnumbered American and Filipino forces retreat after Japanese attack in December 1941. Four months into their resistance, desperate American and Filipino forces were merely out of food, water, ammunition, medicine, and other supplies. MacArthur had been evacuated from the Philippines. Hunger and disease were getting to be extremely common within the population of the soldiers. The cruelty among the determined Japanese soldiers was unpredictable. Over 72,000 people were marched to prison camps. For some the trek could take up to three years. BY the end of the war, 37% of all POWs in the Pacific theatre would be dead. A monument was put up on top of of a 4,500 ft. mountain on the southern part of Bataan to honor the people who suffered and died there during the war.
On April 3rd, 1042, Japan launched its final offensive on Bataan. April 9th, General Edward surrenders Bataan.

Babe Ruth

In baseball there is a wonderful moment. The moment where the ball hits the bat, and flies out of the field. This is known as a home run. Babe Ruth was one of the greatest baseball players who ever lived. He Practically invented the home run. He revolutionized his sport. There was nobody in statistics of power who came close to him. There was nobody who played the game better than he did. The biggest sports name in the history of America. He had a great personality as well. Ruth had a rough childhood, and all he could do was play baseball. Ruth could play every position perfectly. Although Ruth could play every position perfectly, his pitching shined the most. Ruth introduced the "live ball" era. The home run was such an amazing thing during Babe's time. Home runs were so amazing that when he was scoring his first home runs, the other team collected the balls. In 1920 as an individual Babe Ruth out hit 14 of the 16 teams in the major league in home runs. Babe Ruth used a 54 ounce bat. The heaviest bats nowadays is 36 ounces. Babe Ruth made the Yankees the world wide sports sensation they are today. Before Yankee Stadium, the Yankees shared a rented stadium with the New York Giants. Babe Ruth attracted so many fans that they had to build a much bigger stadium. Today, this is known as Yankee stadium. He was Americas first sporting celebrity. He was quite possibly the most photographed man in American history.

Letter home

Hello family, I hope all has been well in the last six months. I really miss you. I just thought that I'd let you all know that I'm doing ok. I'm not hurt. I will tell you, it's rough out here. I've been assigned to ambulance driver. I've seen a lot of awful things since i've been gone. Things that i'll never forget. Terrible things, that no matter what I do, will scar my brain till the day I die. It's a scary place. I've had to drive my bleeding out friends to the base, i've had to frantically escape a bombing in an ambulance with as many people as we could pack in. I nearly got crushed by a collapsing wall. You never know what to expect out here. You must be on your toes at all times or you will get hurt. I've been praying every night. Sometimes a couple times throughout the day. I'm always thinking about you guys. Everything reminds me of you guys. I just cant stop. Soon enough though. I'll be walking through that front door of ours as if I just attended a business trip. I love you guys. I'll see you soon. Take care

Causes of WW1

One of the main causes of World War 1, was mutual defense alliances. If a country was attacked, their allies would step in and help them out. These alliances included Russia and Serbia, Germany and Austria- Hungary, France and Russia, Britain, France, and Russia and Japan and Britain.
Another major cause of WW1 was Imperialism. The increasing competition for greater empires led to an increase in confrontation which eventually pushed the world into World War 1. ANother great cause of WW1 would be Militarism. All countries were constantly battling to have a better, stronger military. This as well led the world into WW1. Nationalism also played a huge role in starting WW1. Countries were always battling on which country is better. The immediate cause of World War 1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. This assassination led to Austria- Hungary declaring war on Serbia. When Russia began to mobilize due to its alliance with Serbia, Germany declared war on Russia. This is how World War 1 started. The Zimmerman note declared that we as a country would start submarine warfare on Fe 1st

T.E. Lawrence

Rickey Havern
Us history
T.E. Lawrence
T.E. Lawrence
T.E. Lawrence was a British archeological scholar, adventurist, military strategist and was the writer of “ The Seven Pillars of Wisdom”. T.E. Lawrence was born in 1888, and lived till 1935. Many people over the years have attempted to discredit his accomplishments, but his legend has remained very strong.
T.E. Lawrence was better known as “ The Lawrence of Arabia”. He achieved this name by the astonishing role he played in helping the Arabs against the Turks in World War One. By the age of 31, Lawrence was an international celebrity. Sadly his life came to an abrupt stop when he fatally crashed his motorcycle in 1935 at the age of 46.

T.E. Lawrence became an extremely influential figure in the Arab forces. In particular his Guerrilla warfare proved successful in undermining Germany’s ottoman ally. Lawrence was injured several times during his campaigns. He suffered many bullet and shrapnel wounds.

In 1917 Lawrence took the port of Akaba and led his Arab forces to the dessert, distracting the Turks when the British army began its invasion of Palestine and Syria. Lawrence acquired the knowledge of the language and the customs of the Arab people. Soon after the outbreak of WW1, Lawrence was assigned to intelligence as an Arabian expert. in 1916, Lawrence joined forces with Arabian Sheik Feisal al Husayn. In "Seven Pillars", (a book written by Lawrence", he describes his first meeting with Feisal." I felt at first glance that this was the man I came to Arabia to seek- The leader who would bring the full arab revolt to a full glory. Feisal looked very tall and pillar like, very slender, in his long white silk robe and his brown head cloth… His eyelids were dropped; and his black beard and colorless face were like a mask against the strange, still watchfulness of his body
In 1916, Lawrence was captured and subjected to beatings and homosexual rape by the Turkish Governor of Daraa. Though he escaped, he was shattered by the experience.

1) What qualities did Sinclair believe a person must have to succeed in Packingtown?
Sinclair believed that the qualities of people needed to be in order. He believed that the ability to work on your own and mind your own business was a necessity. If you were easily distracted, then you were not Packingtown material.
2)According to the passage, what is the plant owner's main goal?
The main goal of the plant owner was to make as much money as possible. The matter wasn't how the money was made, or who it hurt. All that mattered was the amount of money made..
3) What does Sinclair mean when he says, "...there was no place in it where a man counted for anything against a dollar....?"
What Sinclair meant by this quotation, was that basically the money was more important than the workers. As long as there was money being made, the quality of workers lives wasn't an issue.
According to Upton Sinclair, the only way to rise up the ranks in the meat packing industry was by telling lies and spying on your fellow coworkers. If you ever met a man rising up in Packingtown, he was a knave.
the main goal of the meat packing owners was to make as much money as humanly possible. One tactic they used to do this was to use calve meat. Which was not up to standards when it came to food. As well as using low quality meat, if you were injured in the process, you would be fired because you no longer can provide help.
